Who is Lord Shani?
Lord Shani is the son of Sun God and Goddess Chayya (shadow of the wife of Sun).
The term Shani literally means one who moves very slowly. Shani dev has a slow move. It is said that Shani kicked his foster mother as a young boy when she was delaying to feed him. Therefore she cursed him to become lame in one leg.
Lord Shani has the authority to reward or punish people for their good and bad deeds. That’s why he is called ‘karamfal daata’ (lord of granting the fruits of one’s action).
It is said that Shani Dev troubles and harass those individuals who come under the influence of Sade Sati but it is entirely false. Shani Dev is Lord of Justice and He gives us the fruits of our actions only. If you have done good deeds you will receive reward on the contrary if have done bad then misfortune will befall on you.
Shani dev is also worshipped by Jains and Buddhists. In fact, Shani dev is shown riding a tortoise in Buddhism.
